This archive collects the works of architectural designer Toyosaburo Kondo, drawn over a lifetime devoted to his craft. We are publishing 130 works to start, with plans to gradually expand the collection to 500, then 1,000, then 1,500 works.
Kondo began his training as a carpenter in traditional Japanese construction in 1960, later traveling to England and touring Europe to study architecture. Since founding his architectural design office in 1967, he has maintained a consistent approach — "draw it, then have a craftsman build it" — producing a wide variety of designs across Western, Victorian, Provençal and other styles, no two ever the same.
His philosophy, learned in Europe, is to design buildings with the next hundred years in mind, treating design and construction as one unified process. Each drawing carries the real time he spent picturing the client's future life as he put pen to paper.
We hope this record proves useful to those carrying architectural design forward into the next generation.
